My Protein Experiment

In the month of February, I am focusing on increasing my protein intake. I recently realized that I am not eating enough to fuel my body. I have eaten with weight loss in mind for my entire life. Until now, I have known NO other way. Now that I am 117lbs lighter and working out a lot more, I am learning that my body requires more and different fuel.

Based on my current stats and my desired outcomes, I should be consuming about 2,100 calories a day, and 240g of protein a day. This easily is triple the amount of protein I am used to consuming, and well over 500+ more calories. It seemed like too much! I know to trust my research and processes, so I have been committed to this for four days now. Just in these four short days, I have dropped 5lbs and SO much bloat has come off. My workouts have more volume and my recovery rate seems to be MUCH faster. I have been at about 150-170g of protein for the last four days. I am struggling to hit that 240g mark. I have added protein shakes to my intake twice a day, which boosts me up another 40g of protein. I thought this protein powder was all good – MCT’s, gluten-free, all natural, all these great claims on the cannister. The ingredient list looked good until I got to the “less than 1% section.” They lost me at carrageenan. I know that some people are ok with “acceptable amounts” of certain ingredients, and I respect this perspective. For me, any amount of something that is known to be slightly toxic or harmful in food is too much. I simply do not want to put those items in my body. SO here I am on the hunt for the perfect protein powder for me, for right now.

Here are the factors that I was looking for & why:

  1. High Protein – that is, after all, the greatest goal here.
  2. Low Carb – I am still doing Keto for the most part and want something that is friendly toward this lifestyle.
  3. Organic/Clean – I care greatly about what I put into my body. If I cannot recognize the ingredients, it is usually off-the-table for me right now.
  4. Price – Like most people, I am on a budget.

I am big on research, so I wanted to compare side-by-side. I looked at 16 different “keto proteins” on Amazon. 13 of them made the cut for me to detail out. I figured I’d share my research in case anyone else is on the hunt for their perfect protein. This is far from a comprehensive list of everything out there – hell, it isn’t even all of the ones on Amazon – but it is a good place for me to start. Please keep in mind that the prices and info changes often, so always do your own double-checking before you click that “add to cart” button.

I’ll continue to share updates with my progress and findings as the experiment goes on. Wish me good protein luck!
